Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Headphones Review – Experts' Opinion

Let's now deep-dive into the detailed Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro review.

Comfort and Design

The name "Beyerdynamic" and the word "comfort" are synonymous. Yes, that's right. All Beyerdynamic headphones feel soft and plush. And, we did not feel different about the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Headphones.

Plush earpads
The Beyedynamic DT 990 Pro Headphones have soft and velvety earpads.

The headphones with a circumaural design comprise a flexible headband with soft padding and mushy ear pads for a comfort-filled listening experience. The ear cups are large. The ear pads feel velvety and plush. We did not experience any sweating issues as we tested the headphones during the colder months; however, you may experience heating issues in summers. The headband that connects both the ear cups is mostly spring steel and the ear cups are made of plastic. Nevertheless, the plastic is sturdy and premium-quality.

Overall, the clamping force is neither too weak nor too strong. It's just perfect and won't give you a headache if you use the headphones for several hours at a stretch, especially when mixing, mastering or recording in the studio.

The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Headphones come in two different colors. One is the full black version that comprises a black body and black ear cups. The other version is black and gray, with a black body and gray ear cups. The full black version has a more professional look. However, if you are looking for something more stylish, we suggest buying the black and gray version.

For added convenience, the headphones comprise a one-sided cable. So, you can wear or remove them without any tangling issues.

Sound

As already mentioned in the beginning of the review, the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Headphones are open-back studio headphones. Therefore, they deliver excellent three-dimensional sound. The sound profile is V-shaped. Unlike the Philips SHP9500 Headphones, the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro bass is strong yet well balanced. The bass is definitely prominent for an open-back design.

However, it is not too overpowering. The treble boost is powerful and sounds sharp. The mids are mild, and the low and high frequencies are clear. To be honest, the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Headphones sound better than some of the best surround sound headphones. Nevertheless, if you want more power, you can couple the headphones with one of the best headphone amplifiers on the market.

Excellent sound quality
The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Headphones have excellent sound quality.

The soundstage is wide and the instrumental separation is great. Therefore, Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro is good for gaming, studio recording, and casual use. In simpler words, if you want clear and beautifully transcending highs, and decent lows, you should definitely buy these headphones.

Noise Isolation

Since the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Headphones have an open back, they do not isolate external noises. Also, we experienced minor sound leakage with these headphones at normal volumes. No one around us complained of music coming out of the headphones. However, the sound leakage can be an issue at higher volumes.

Usage

The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Headphones are professional headphones. Therefore, you can use them for mixing, mastering, and recording in the studio. We used these headphones with various desk setups for studio use. We also used the Beyerdynamics DT 990 Pro Headphones for listening to music, watching TV, and gaming.

These headphones are available in two models with different impedance: 80 Ohms and 250 Ohms. On the one hand, the 80 Ohms model is suitable for a variety of studio applications; they are very versatile. On the other hand, the 250 Ohms model is professional-grade. The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro 250 Ohms Headphones are best for mixing and mastering in the studio. We were not surprised to learn that many popular DJs are using these headphones for mixing and mastering. We've also listed the DT 990 Pro as one of the best DJ headphones.

Gaming

The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Headphones are ideal for gaming.
The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Headphones are ideal for gaming.

Previously, one of the gaming enthusiasts on our team was using a wireless gaming headset and he was quite happy with it. However, after using the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Headphones for gaming, he does not want to look back. According to him, these headphones are far better than many high-end gaming headsets too. We asked him whether the open-back design is an issue while gaming, and he said, "He uses the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Headphones in a quiet environment and does not feel the need for buying closed-back headphones."

The spatial sound delivered by these headphones plays a special role in gaming. If there is one thing that is missing in these headphones, it is a microphone. You'll have to purchase the microphone separately as the headphones do not comprise a built-in microphone. The Antlion Audio ModMic Uni Attachable Noise-Canceling Microphone can be a good option. It comprises a mute switch, and is compatible with Mac, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC.

In conclusion, the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Headphones are suitable for solo listening as they do not offer noise isolation, and non-competitive gaming. The headphones are also great for bass-heavy music. We do not recommend these headphones for travel or outdoor use.

Connectivity

The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Headphones comprise a 3.5 mm jack and 1/4-inch adapter.
The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Headphones come with a 3.5 mm connector and 1/4″ adapter.

Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro, much like most headphones, comes with an audio cable (1 meter long) comprising a 3.5 mm jack. This makes them compatible with most of the computers, televisions, smartphones, etc. A ¼" adapter which you may need during professional recording or with mixing equipment, is provided with the headphones. Both the 3.5 mm jack and ¼" adapter are gold-plated. As already mentioned above, the headphones comprise a one-sided cable for convenience. You can use one hand to wear or remove the headphones. However, the cable is fixed inside the headphones and you cannot remove it.
